Moonlit Phoenix

the assignment

In Cinema 4D, build a phoenix and animate the story of its life cycle.

the process

First, the bird was drawn in photoshop and colors were picked to create a glowing moon color scheme. Second, a tentative storyboard was made, but this storyboard was replaced later for the more abstract concept as currently seen in the rendered video. Third, the bird was modeled in Cinema 4D where joints were added to allow the wings realistic flapping abilities. At this stage, the head and tail feathers were redesigned so that the model wouldn’t slow down the rendering. Lastly, animating and rendering.

the challenge

The wings were the hardest part. Several times the joints had to be created to find the right amount that would both support and prevent the wings from becoming a floppy mess. Also, when animating there were a time and place for when to rotate the wings to make them appear to be flapping otherwise dynamics (artificial gravity) did the work.
