Create something that writers can use.
the process
Research: Carl Jung’s archetypes and observation of writers led to the idea of creating a deck of cards to be used as inspiration for knowing the internal, external, and location of the character.
Art Style: Inspired by 1800s Arts and Craft Movement, repeating patterns, and medieval illustrations.
Fonts: Kreon is a google font chosen for its similarity to the printing press as a serif typeface. The heading typeface was created look similar to extravagant medieval typefaces.
Card Fronts: Illustration icons were tested by people reading a description of Jung’s archetype and picking the illustration that matched. The backgrounds for the cards were designed by looking at a farmer almanac’s meaning for plants.
Content: Archetype content is based on Carl Jung’s research. Content for location and character cards are based on what people wanted to see from each genre.
Color: The color scheme was finalized by posting selected options for people to vote on Instagram.
Logo: It had to convey storytelling, infinite possibilities, and luxury. Storytelling was most important and is represented by a book. Infinity is represented by the winding ribbon and how the book is only half-behind the ribbon. Lastly, luxury is represented
by the centered composition.
Box: Based on the design work of colors and logo.
Instructions: Describes how each card category is used and ends with showing other
genres to collect.
the challange
Mostly creating everything in a short amount of time. 15 icons, 15 backgrounds for those icons, borders, 35 cards with content…in 3 months. Also, creating a typeface was challanging.
